ByteDance Suspends Rewards System in TikTok Lite Amid EU Investigation into Addictive Behaviors

TikTok suspends rewards program due to investigation by EU

The European Commission has launched an investigation into TikTok Lite, a ByteDance extension application that uses a points and rewards system to encourage users to watch and interact with videos. The app is currently being tested in Spain and France, and the EU wants to understand its impact on minors and how ByteDance has worked to mitigate risks such as addictive behaviors.

In response to the investigation, ByteDance has decided to voluntarily suspend the reward functions of TikTok Lite. The company stated in a brief statement shared on X social network, “We are voluntarily suspending the rewards features on TikTok Lite while we address the concerns that have been raised.”

ByteDance emphasizes its commitment to collaborating constructively with authorities and ensuring compliance with regulations regarding transparency and protection of minors. By pausing the rewards system, ByteDance aims to address the concerns raised by the European Commission and demonstrate its commitment to user safety, particularly for minors.
