Chasing Shadows: A Family’s Unique Experience during the Total Solar Eclipse in Middlebury, Vermont

Middlebury scientists celebrate witnessing their first total solar eclipse

Astronomy Professor Eilat Glikman and her daughter Navah remained on the lawn in Middlebury, Vermont after a solar eclipse event, while many others left soon after totality. Glikman described the experience as an amazing human event that they all shared. On the other hand, Navah expressed awe at how different the eclipse was from what she expected.

Glikman and Navah chose to watch the eclipse among college students gathered on picnic blankets, enjoying the atmosphere of the party. Catherine Miller, Observatory Specialist, captured solar photos of the eclipse using two cameras from across the lawn. She wanted to document the eclipse for Middlebury and took advantage of her first attempt at solar photography.

Miller described her experience of her first total solar eclipse as wild, especially during full totality. She was amazed by the sight and felt compelled to document it for posterity. An earlier version of this story misspelled Eilat Glikman’s surname.
