Chinese President Xi Jinping’s European Tour: Strengthening Ties While Remembering the Past

Xi Jinping Condemns NATO for Bombing Chinese Embassy in Belgrade during European Trip in 1999

During his first trip to Europe in five years, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the diverse relationships China has with European countries. Following meetings with French and EU leaders, Xi criticized NATO for bombing the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in 1999. This criticism was voiced in an opinion article published in a Serbian newspaper just before his state visit to Serbia, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the attack.

Serbia and Hungary, both participants in China’s New Silk Road initiative, are key allies for Beijing in Europe. Xi’s visit to these countries aims to strengthen ties with European nations while commemorating historical events like the embassy bombing. In Serbia, Xi reiterated China’s commitment to peace while remembering the tragic history of the attack. He praised the friendship between China and Serbia, which has been solidified through shared experiences.

Xi also discussed trade relationships with EU leaders during his visits to France and Hungary. China is looking to address concerns like “risk reduction” policies that could impact its exports. The European tour continues with Xi and Macron calling for an “Olympic truce” to coincide with the Paris Olympic Games this summer, promoting a message of peace amid ongoing tensions between China and the EU.
