Code Stroke: A Race Against Time as Medical Team Saves Patient’s Life with Pioneering Brain Surgery

The Race Against Time: Preventing Stroke Fatalities in 45 Minutes

On April 13, Dr. Duong Dinh Hoan, Head of the Neurointerventional Unit at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, explained that Mr. Hung was admitted in poor condition, with symptoms including a distorted mouth, slurred speech, weakness on the left side of the body, and difficulty walking. The hospital activated the “Code Stroke” process, prioritizing human resources and machinery for stroke emergencies.

The results of cerebral computed tomography angiography (CTA) revealed occlusion of the right internal carotid artery and middle cerebral artery in Mr. Hung. The patient was treated with intravenous thrombolysis in the imaging room to save time before being moved to the vascular intervention room. The doctor inserted a microscopic catheter into the femoral artery to reach the location of the clogged blood vessel in the brain and remove the thrombus.

Dr. Hoan assessed that Mr. Hung’s case was challenging due to the large artery blockage and severe narrowing of the artery in the neck. The doctor needed to dilate the balloon or place a stent at the site of narrowing before removing the clot causing the blockage. After a 30-minute operation, Mr. Hung’s cerebral blood vessels were reopened.
