Croatia’s Political Landscape Shifts as 10th Convocation Deputies Bid Farewell to Parliament

Social Democrats suffer major losses: from 18 mandates to zero, left without a response

In the recent parliamentary elections, many deputies of the 10th convocation fought for a new term in office. While some were successful in winning a new mandate, others entered the category of losers. Among those who did not secure a new term are the Social Democrats, who split in 2022 and lost their seats in the Parliament. Despite being the strongest opposition club numerically, they did not receive enough votes to retain their positions.

Some well-known figures, such as Davor Bernardić and Katarina Peović, also did not win reelection. The Homeland Movement, a significant political force in the country, failed to gain enough trust from voters in the third constituency, resulting in entertainers like Davor Dretar Drele losing their parliamentary seats. The Reformists, who had one mandate in the previous convocation, also did not secure representation in the Parliament this time.

Among those who lost their seats are Bojan Glavašević and Ermina Lekaj Prljaskaj. Glavašević is a former independent representative who ran on different lists in various elections. Despite not winning a seat this time, he remains active in politics. Lekaj Prljaskaj bid farewell to the parliamentary benches as the representative of the Albanian national minority.

Overall, these losses signify a shift in Croatia’s political landscape and mark an end to some long-standing political parties and individuals’ careers. However, despite their disappointment of not being reelected, many of these individuals remain committed to working for a better Croatia and continue their efforts towards achieving that goal.
