BCU Holds Conference on Achieving Cultural Awareness in Healthcare

The “Achieving Cultural Awareness in Health Care” conference, hosted by the Briar Cliff University Center for Interprofessional Education, Practice, and Scholarship on April 12th in Sioux City, Iowa, attracted healthcare practitioners, educators, and community members seeking to deepen their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare. The event aimed to address health disparities by educating students and professionals on the importance of delivering evidence-based care to culturally diverse populations.

One of the highlights of the conference was the exploration of the healthcare needs of refugees. Speakers from organizations such as the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, Lutheran Services in Iowa, Mary J. Treglia Community House, and Catholic Charities led engaging sessions on various aspects of refugee healthcare. The presentations included topics such as the basics of refugee status and resettlement, health screening processes for refugees, mental health services for refugees, and a panel discussion featuring the lived experiences of former refugees.
