Curiosity Rover Prepares for Atmospheric Study and Sand Scuffing on Sol 1215

Sol 1216: Anticipating Sampling and Scuffing

On Sol 1215, the Curiosity rover made a 67-meter drive towards its Namib Dune sampling site. The location of interest is clearly visible in the Navcam image. Today’s plan includes another drive to position the rover for sampling and scuffing, which involves using a rover wheel to dig a small trench in the sand.

The scientific activities for the day include ChemCam and Mastcam observations to study the composition and opacity of the atmosphere. Additionally, the Mastcam will be used to look for any movement in the sand. After these observations, the rover will drive to within 5-6 meters of its desired sampling spot. Post-drive images will be taken to prepare for a final adjustment tomorrow.

The team is eagerly anticipating that the sampling and scuffing activities will take place in the coming days, and they are closely monitoring the rover on both Thursday and Friday as these activities unfold.
