Decarbonizing the Shipping Industry: HZME’s Pioneering Approach with Methanol Engines

Hitachi Zosen takes the lead in reducing emissions in the shipping industry with innovative green methanol technology

The shipping and shipbuilding industry is taking a proactive approach towards decarbonization, shifting away from traditional heavy fuel oil to greener alternatives like LNG, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen. This move is seen as critical in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the impact of climate change.

Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine (HZME), a subsidiary of Hitachi Zosen based in Kumamoto Prefecture, has partnered with MAN Energy Solutions, a German engine manufacturer, to develop technology that converts engines from using heavy fuel oil to green methanol. The companies are also working on producing methanol engines in-house to further support this transition.

HZME has been actively involved in both the development of conversion technology and manufacturing engines. They have already received an order from MAN for a test methanol engine and plan to conduct verification trials of the technology at their Ariake plant in Kumamoto from September to November 2024.

The potential of green methanol in decarbonizing the shipping industry is highlighted by Gen Koganezaki’s article on Japan 2 Earth. This website also features other articles focusing on environmental challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting a shift towards a more sustainable future.

Overall, HZME’s efforts towards decarbonization are commendable as they lead the way towards a more sustainable future for the shipping industry through innovative green technologies.
