Delaware Science Olympiad: Cape Henlopen High School Wins Bronze Medal in Ping Pong Parachute Event

Cape High School students participate in the Delaware Science Olympiad

In recent years, Cape High students have been hard at work preparing for the annual Delaware Science Olympiad at Delaware State University. This year, they finally had the chance to showcase their skills and dedication in the event, where teammates Aaron Tikiob and Joshua Cohen won a bronze medal in their ping pong parachute event.

The eight-member team was guided by advisors Priscilla Coolbaugh, Stephanie Halter, and Peter Burnham, who commended their achievement and looked forward to seeing what they would accomplish in the future. The school had not participated in the event since 2019, but with eight students competing in a variety of events such as forestry, disease detectives, wonders of electricity, and more, they were up against 44 other high school teams from Delaware.

To prepare for the competition, the team used microscopes to study human hair, collaborated to build robots and parachutes, and studied for assessments. Despite facing tough competition from other schools in the state, Tikiob and Cohen managed to secure a bronze medal in their ping pong parachute event. Their dedication and skills paid off as they were recognized for their achievements.

Moving forward, Cape Henlopen High School hopes to expand its science Olympiad team to a full roster of 15 students and potentially add a second team. The goal is to earn more medals in future competitions through hard work and passion. Coolbaugh expressed her excitement about this prospect and encouraged other families to get involved with community volunteer opportunities on competition day.

The Delaware Science Olympiad aims to inspire students to excel in scientific education through challenging competitions that test their knowledge and creativity. The event is sponsored by organizations such as the Delaware Nature Society
