Diplomatic Dispute: Ecuadorian Police Storm Mexican Embassy, Arrest Former Vice President

A Mexican embassy in Quito, Ecuador was stormed by a group of police officers on Friday night. The former vice president of Mexico, Jorge Glas, who had taken refuge in the embassy after being granted political asylum by the Mexican government last December, was detained by the officers.

The Ecuadorian government confirmed Glas’s arrest and stated that he was placed under the orders of the competent authorities. The Security Block, created by the Ecuadorian government to coordinate operations against organized crime, detained Glas. Shortly after the arrest, the Presidency of the Republic justified the police operation and stated that every embassy serves as a diplomatic space to strengthen relations between countries.

The Ecuadorian Government expressed concern about the breach of immunities and privileges granted to the diplomatic mission and criticized Mexico for granting asylum to Glas. The government emphasized that it will not allow criminals to go unpunished and reiterated its respect for the Mexican people in the fight against corruption. The head of the Chancellery and Political Affairs of the Embassy condemned the Ecuadorian agents’ actions and expressed fear for Glas’s life, calling it unacceptable and barbaric.
