Dream to Reality: A Journey of Love and Passion with a Failed Bookstore in Douglas

Douglas’ Sciuto’s Bookshop to shut down after one year of operation

Andrea Sciuto had always dreamed of opening a bookshop, a dream she shared with her husband Zack. They first started selling donated books out of a small space in Douglas off Main Street during their college years. After graduating and getting married, they saw it as an adventure they wanted to take on as a family.

The couple managed to build up a collection of about 2,400 titles, most of which were donated or purchased at low prices. The books were in like-new or really good condition and priced at 50% off their original price. They included rare copies as well as more familiar titles and authors that caught the eye of passersby.

Despite their initial success, foot traffic dwindled over time, leading to inadequate business for the bookshop. Andrea believes that Douglas is not busy enough to support a bookstore and that it’s not something people typically spend a whole day at unless they are making multiple stops.

Despite this setback, Andrea expressed that they gave it their best shot and are at peace with their decision to close the shop at the end of April. They are considering donating the remaining books to local libraries. Andrea reflects on the joy the bookstore brought her and looks forward to what the future may bring for her family.
