Equipping Communities with Mental Health First Aid: Youth and Adult Training Sessions in Salida

Mental Health First Aid Training Now Offered for Free – by Carly Winchell

A Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training will be held in Salida on April 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The training, which is offered by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, aims to make mental health first aid as commonplace as CPR by equipping participants with the knowledge to identify, understand, and respond to mental health issues.

The training is designed for individuals who work with children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 and provides them with the tools to recognize and address signs of mental health and substance use challenges in this age group. Topics covered in the training include risk factors, warning signs, information on various challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and substance use, as well as a five-step action plan to assist those facing mental health or substance use issues.

Participants will also have access to evidence-based professional, peer, and self-help resources to further support their understanding and abilities in addressing mental health challenges. Registration for this free training can be completed by emailing Kirsten Love at KLove@ChaffeeCounty.org. The training is open to community members aged 18 and older.

In addition to the youth MHFA training, Chaffee County Public Health is also offering two Adult MHFA trainings for individuals over 18 years old on April 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., May 22nd from 9:00 a.m., and May 23rd from noon until noon (participants must attend both days). Pre-work of approximately two hours is required for these trainings
