Exceptional Students Shine at Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair: Aydan Gerber and Mateo Del Rio Lanse’s Innovative Projects Recognized

Iona Prep Students Win Regeneron Science Fair Division Awards

Two exceptional students from Iona Prep have been recognized for their outstanding work at the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair. Senior Aydan Gerber and junior Mateo Del Rio Lanse both earned division awards for their innovative projects.

Gerber’s project focused on developing an algorithm using Python to analyze keyword frequency and identify significant topics of discussion under the #sustainability hashtag on Twitter. His results were published by Cambridge University Press in February, showcasing his dedication to scientific research and analysis.

Del Rio Lanse, on the other hand, worked on improving machine-learning rates by developing three convolutional neural networks that can screen for tumors in brain scans. His innovative approach to medical research has the potential to revolutionize the field and improve patient outcomes.

The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair aims to encourage high school students in Westchester, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties to engage in hands-on science and research. By providing a platform for these students to showcase their work, the fair helps promote innovation and academic excellence. The top 20 projects from the competition will advance to the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair, where these students will have the opportunity to present their research on a global stage.

Over 700 high school students participated in this year’s event, which took place on March 16th at Somers High School. The fair is a testament to the passion and dedication of these young scientists who are committed to advancing knowledge through scientific discovery and innovation.

In conclusion, Aydan Gerber and Mateo Del Rio Lanse are two talented students who have made significant contributions to their respective fields through their exceptional work at the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair. Their achievements demonstrate that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible for young scientists who are passionate about advancing knowledge through scientific discovery and innovation.
