Experience a Piece of History with Mika Häkkinen’s McLaren P1 Prototype Up for Sale at Bonhams Monaco Auction

Purchase the McLaren P1 previously owned by double-F1 world champion Mika Häkkinen

The McLaren P1 is an extremely rare car, with only 375 examples built and a handful of prototype examples. Any example that comes up for sale is highly sought after, and the latest up for grabs is a particularly special car. A prototype example, internally referred to as the P1 VP3 (Validation Prototype 3), is currently being auctioned off by Bonhams at its sale in Monaco on May 10.

The current estimate for this unique car is between $1.2 million and $1.5 million, making it an attractive investment for collectors and enthusiasts alike. What sets this particular P1 apart from others is that it was owned by two-time Formula 1 world champion Mika Häkkinen, who won his titles in 1998 and 1999 while driving for McLaren.

Häkkinen’s P1 will be sold with a one-day driving course provided by the winning bidder as part of the sale at their location of choice. The car has been meticulously maintained and comes with a booklet detailing test notes and other information collected during the development phase. The black color scheme featuring orange accents in McLaren’s signature Papaya hue was chosen by Häkkinen and applied via McLaren’s MSO department. There is no mention of how many miles the car has covered, but it’s clear that it has been driven sparingly due to its rarity and value.

The McLaren P1 was launched early last decade as one of the Holy Trinity of electrified hypercars along with the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. It makes 903 hp via a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 with a single electric motor. A successor with a similar powertrain and possibly gullwing doors is coming, tipped for a reveal later this year. This prototype example offers an excellent opportunity to own a piece of history while also gaining access to exclusive experiences through Mika Häkkinen’s one-day driving course offer.
