Experience American History with Union Pacific’s Iconic Big Boy No. 4014

Northern California to welcome world’s largest steam locomotive

The iconic Big Boy No. 4014 is set to embark on a historic journey through several states before making a stop in the Northern California railroad town of Roseville. This steam locomotive, owned by Union Pacific, holds significant importance in the nation’s history and showcases the technological advancements made in the railroad industry.

The Big Boy is one of seven remaining locomotives out of the original 25 built in the late 1930s to early 1940s. It served Union Pacific from December 1941 to December 1961, traveling over one million miles before being retired and displayed in Pomona, California until its acquisition by Union Pacific for restoration in 2013. The locomotive was restored and returned to service for the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion in May 2019.

The Big Boy will arrive in Roseville on July 12 and remain on display until July 13 before continuing east towards Ogden, Utah. In Ogden, it will be on display from July 20 to July 21 before returning home to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Spectators are advised to maintain a safe distance of at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks when the Big Boy arrives.
