Expert Consultation Meeting on PFAS Health Risk Data to Be Held in Raleigh

Review of PFAS Effects by the Secretaries’ Science Board

On Wednesday at 10 a.m., state officials will gather in Raleigh for a meeting to consult with experts on the Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board for guidance on existing PFAS health risk data. The board, made up of experts in toxicology, public health, ecology, engineering and related fields, advises the departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services. During the meeting, the board will compare exposure assessments from the CDC and EPA on PFAS compounds. Exposure assessments aim to determine if a community has been exposed to a certain substance in their environment by measuring the amount, frequency, and duration of exposure.

The meeting will take place at the Archdale Building in Raleigh, with options for in-person attendance or online listening through WebEx using the provided webinar number and password. The agenda includes updates on a PFAS rulemaking package and recent peer-reviewed studies on PFMOAA, a unique PFAS found in North Carolina. Additionally, the board will address human health risk data related to 1,4-Dioxane in drinking water, a solvent used in manufacturing and found in trace amounts in certain consumer products.
