Eye Lice Infestation: A Rare yet Dangerous Health Condition Affecting Children”.

Eyelids of 5-Year-Old Covered in Lice

A young girl experienced severe itching on her eyelids that was not relieved by saline drops. When she went to the hospital at midnight, doctors discovered multiple lice clinging to her eyelids. On May 7, Doctor Le Viet Phap, Acting Head of the Department of Examination and Emergency at Saigon Can Tho Eye Hospital, removed all the lice and eggs from the patient’s eyelashes. The doctor provided instructions to the family on how to care for their eyes to prevent spreading and reinfection.

According to family members, the girl had been experiencing itchy eyes for some time now. She frequently rubbed them and noticed foreign objects stuck to her eyelashes. However, it was only when symptoms worsened that they sought emergency treatment late at night on May 5. Eyelash lice, scientifically known as Pthirus pubis, are blood-sucking arthropods that can parasitize humans. They can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or indirectly through items like clothing and towels.

Symptoms of eyelash lice infestation include chronic irritation, itchy eyelids, conjunctivitis, and keratitis due to saliva and feces causing allergies when the lice feed. It is important to pay attention to symptoms such as intense itching, red rash on the eyelids, swollen and watery eyes, and seek medical advice promptly. Doctors advise parents to use antibacterial products to remove lice, wash bedding at high temperatures, and treat the patient and family members to prevent further spread.

Eye care professionals emphasize proper treatment and hygiene practices are essential in protecting children’s health and preventing reinfection. Removing lice and eggs with tweezers, following prescribed medications
