Failed Aid Delivery in Gaza: A Crippling Reality and Calls for Immediate Action

Head of UN Health Agency Calls for Safe Delivery of Humanitarian Aid in Gaza

The situation in Gaza has become increasingly dire as aid delivery efforts have been hindered by ongoing hostilities, Israeli military restrictions on goods and the breakdown of order inside the coastal enclave. This has made it extremely difficult to bring vital aid to many parts of Gaza.

In a recent mission, UN agencies and aid groups were unable to complete their trip to Kamal Adwan and Awda hospitals in northern Gaza due to severe delays at checkpoints and ongoing hostilities. Fuel and medical supplies did not reach Kamal Adwan for the second time in seven days, while partners were unable to assess needs at Awda to support the restoration of services. Despite these challenges, the team managed to evacuate four patients, including a 9-year-old boy with a head tumor.

The head of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for safe passage for humanitarian aid missions in Gaza following this failure. He reiterated the need for compliance with international humanitarian law and stressed access to health care and humanitarian aid for civilians in desperate need. Calls for a cease-fire have also been made to address the worsening situation in Gaza.

Israel has isolated northern Gaza since the ground offensive in late October, leading to severe shortages of food and water as well as displacement of tens of thousands of people from the area. As a result, many Palestinians are struggling to survive amidst ongoing violence and restrictions on basic necessities such as healthcare and education.

Despite these challenges, WHO remains committed to working towards improving access to healthcare and delivering essential aid to those who need it most. The organization continues to call on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and work towards finding a peaceful solution that prioritizes the well-being of civilians caught up in this complex conflict.

The situation in Gaza is undoubtedly one that requires urgent attention from both Israelis and Palestinians alike. With more than 2 million people living under blockade or siege conditions, every day brings new challenges that make it harder for them to survive. It is up
