FHP’s ‘Facetime’ Program: Revolutionizing Minor Car Crash Response on Florida Highways

FHP to Implement Virtual Communication for Responding to Minor Car Crashes

The Florida State Highway Patrol (FHP) has announced plans to implement a video calling program using “Facetime” technology to respond to minor car crashes. With the advancement of technology, the FHP aims to significantly reduce response times by connecting drivers involved in minor incidents with dispatchers who will assess the situation and determine if the driver qualifies for a video call with a desk trooper.

Lt. Colonel Mark Brown of FHP highlighted that this program is designed for minor stop-and-go traffic incidents on highways like I-4, where cars may bump into each other without causing major damage. The desk trooper handling the calls will be someone on administrative or light duty within the FHP. This partnership with the Central Florida Expressway Authority will enable the desk trooper to use software to conduct a virtual investigation of the crash scene, collect photos, and provide assistance to the drivers so they can leave the scene promptly.

The video calling services will be available to drivers as long as their cars are drivable, there are no roadblocks, hit-and-runs, or suspicion of impairment. If there are any indications of impairment, FHP will dispatch a law enforcement officer to handle the situation appropriately. This program is intended to streamline high-volume calls and support FHP’s efforts with limited staffing resources.

In 2022, FHP recorded over 40,000 crashes in Central Florida with property damage. Over the past 13 months, the agency has been testing and refining this program before launching it officially in the summer. The use of technology like video calling will not only improve response times but also enhance efficiency in handling minor car crashes on busy roads.

According to Lt. Colonel Brown, this program will help FHP handle high volumes of calls more effectively while ensuring that drivers receive timely assistance when needed.

Overall, this new initiative by FHP shows their commitment towards using technology effectively in order to improve safety on roads and enhance their services for citizens of Florida.
