Food Deliverers Strike in Brussels: Fighting for Fair Pay and Employment Rights

Uber Eats food delivery drivers to go on strike next week

Food deliverers who work for the Uber Eats platform in Brussels are planning a strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, led by the House of Deliverers collective with support from Christian trade union ACV. The couriers are demanding a pay increase of at least 2 euros per trip and 0.5 euros per kilometer traveled, citing that fees have not been raised since 2019 despite a 20 percent inflation rate.

The food deliverers are also criticizing Uber for not consulting with them on their employment status and the government’s lack of action in this area. Despite a ruling by the Brussels labor court last year that meal deliverers should be considered employees, there has been no change in their status. The strike is expected to involve “several hundred” couriers in Brussels and other cities like Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp.

In addition to the pay increase, the couriers are requesting a consultation with Uber to discuss their employment status. However, they have not yet received a response from the company. The strike action aims to bring attention to the issues faced by food deliverers and push for better working conditions and fair pay. Strike actions are planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, with a campaign also scheduled at Uber’s Belgian headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday.
