Former Patriots running back retires from football at age 27

Damien Harris, a former running back for the New England Patriots, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 27. The Alabama product had a five-season career in the NFL. In an Instagram post, Harris expressed gratitude for his time in the game and the opportunities he had to compete at the highest level.

Harris was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Patriots. Despite limited playing time in his rookie year, he quickly emerged as the starting running back in his second season and had a standout year in 2021, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. However, injuries eventually led to his replacement by Rhamondre Stevenson towards the end of the 2022 season.

Reflecting on his career, Harris acknowledged the mentors and coaches who helped shape his football journey, including Nick Saban and Bill Belichick, whom he described as two of the greatest head coaches of all time. After leaving the Patriots, Harris spent one season with the Buffalo Bills before ultimately deciding to retire from football.

Harris’ decision to retire was not an easy one but after careful consideration and reflection on my career I have decided that it is time for me to step away from this sport I love so much.

I want to thank my family, friends and fans for their support throughout my journey. I also want to thank all my coaches including Nick Saban and Bill Belichick for pushing me to be better every day.

I will always cherish my memories with patriots organization and will forever be grateful for everything they have done for me.

It’s been an honor to wear this jersey (#34) that represents greatness and history
