Four Boston University Men’s Hockey Stars Gear Up for 2024 IIHF Men’s World Championship

Five Terriers Set to Compete in 2024 Men’s World Championship on Skates

Ahti Oksanen and four former Boston University men’s ice hockey standouts are set to compete at the 2024 IIHF Men’s World Championship, which kicks off on Friday in Czechia. Joel Farabee, Brady Tkachuk, Alex Vlasic, and Trevor Zegras will represent the United States, playing under head coach John Hynes (’97).

Oksanen has been named Finland’s captain for the tournament. Tkachuk has been named Team USA’s captain for the tournament, becoming the second Terrier in as many years to wear the ‘C’ for the United States at the World Championship, following Nick Bonino in 2023.

All four Team USA skaters had successful seasons in the NHL. Farabee had a career year with the Philadelphia Flyers, setting personal bests in goals, assists, and points. Tkachuk, who captains the Ottawa Senators, scored a career-high 37 goals. Vlasic, who recently signed a six-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks, contributed offensively while playing significant minutes. Zegras had a shortened season due to injury but still managed to put up points for the Anaheim Ducks.

Hynes had a solid season with a winning record while coaching Minnesota Wild. The tournament’s preliminary round begins on Friday with Finland taking on Czechia and the United States facing Sweden. The full schedule can be found online and all Team USA games will be broadcast on NHL Network.
