From Humble Sourdough Starter to Successful Business: Amanda Flann’s Journey in Baking and Parenting

Mother in Billings transforms love for baking into successful sourdough business

Amanda Flann started her journey in baking by creating a sourdough starter in January 2022. Her daughter, Scottie, was always there to lend a helping hand throughout the process. Flann wanted to ensure that her daughter felt like a priority and not neglected due to her work. As a result, she launched a direct-to-consumer, porch-pickup baked goods business in June of the same year, named As Much As You Knead.

Flann’s business was born during a challenging time in her life when she found baking to be a comforting outlet. She also aimed to create a business that would allow her to stay home with her daughter. In December 2022, Flann took it up a notch by offering sourdough-making classes, combining her passion for baking with connecting with people. For Mother’s Day last year, she offered pre-painted bread decorated with flowers as an exclusive gift. Now, she and Scottie are preparing for their upcoming “Mommy & Me Sourdough Painting” class on May 11th at Poly’s Place Coffee from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $45 and participants will receive freshly baked sourdough loaf to decorate using food-safe paint and markers. Flann considers working alongside Scottie as one of the most rewarding experiences of her life, calling her “my littlest best friend.”
