From Red to Green: King’s Chinese BBQ Reopens After Pest Control and DOH Follow-Up Inspection

Press Releases from the Department of Health

On April 8, 2024, the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) Food Safety Branch issued a green “Pass” placard to King’s Chinese BBQ 5 (DBA General’s Chinese BBQ) after conducting a follow-up inspection. This decision came after an initial complaint inspection on April 4, 2024, revealed an active cockroach infestation, resulting in the issuance of a red placard and the closure of the establishment.

During the follow-up inspection, only two dying roaches were observed on the floor, and no other pest activity was found within or around the kitchen equipment. The food establishment has hired a professional pest control company to conduct weekly treatments for the next month. The DOH will conduct an unannounced follow-up inspection to ensure the establishment remains compliant and actively controls pest prevention efforts.

The DOH has set parameters for the establishment, including working with the pest control company for a month to conduct weekly treatments and ensuring that areas under kitchen equipment are cleaned to eliminate pest attractants.

The DOH Food Safety Branch plays a critical role in protecting and promoting the health of Hawaii residents and visitors through education of food industry workers and regulation of food establishments statewide. The branch conducts routine health inspections of food establishments where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed, or sold, and also investigates sources of foodborne illnesses and potential adulteration to prevent future occurrences.
