SLIM, the Japanese lunar lander, has successfully weathered another long lunar night with temperatures reaching -130 degrees Celsius. This marks the second time in a row that SLIM has survived extreme conditions on the Moon. The mission team made this announcement on March 27, along with a new photo taken by the navigation camera on the lander.
The Smart Lunar Research Lander (SLIM) was launched last September and made a soft landing on the Moon on January 19. This achievement made Japan the 5th country to achieve this milestone, joining the ranks of the Soviet Union, USA, China, and India. Despite landing upside down, which is not optimal for collecting light, SLIM lost contact shortly after landing but revived on January 28 to collect data. The mission team put SLIM into hibernation before the two-week lunar night when ground temperatures dropped to -130 degrees Celsius.
Despite extreme conditions affecting the ship, SLIM has returned to service for the second time. The spacecraft achieved its basic mission goals of accurately landing, deploying two small rovers, and conducting science experiments. While some temperature sensors and battery cells began to malfunction, most functions that worked after the first lunar night could still be used after the second lunar night. In contrast, the Odysseus lander operated by Intuitive Machines in Houston successfully made the first private spacecraft landing on the Moon before being permanently unable to operate again due to malfunctioning equipment.
