The Consequences of Sweet Addiction: Falling Ill as a Result

Nhi, a 25-year-old woman from Dong Da who weighs 75 kg, has been addicted to consuming sweets since childhood. Her favorite foods include cakes, sugared bread, cheese, and condensed milk. She often eats these sweets instead of a regular meal, and they bring her comfort and joy. Despite being criticized for her weight, Nhi continues to consume sweets as they help her cope with stress and make her happy.

Ngoc, a 27-year-old woman from Ha Dong, struggles with obesity and is forced to abstain from sweets, greasy foods, carbonated drinks, and sugar. Ngoc finds it difficult to resist her cravings for sweets which leads to frustration and poor concentration at work. She eventually gives in to her cravings and ends up overeating undoing any progress she had made.

Doctor Hoang Tien Trong Nghia from the Department of Neurology at Military Hospital 175 explains that consuming sweets can release happy hormones that reduce stress and improve mood. However, overconsumption of sugar can lead to various health issues such as insulin resistance, cognitive decline, anxiety depression and addiction. Doctors recommend limiting the intake of sugary foods and drinks to protect overall health.

The World Health Organization warns that the average Vietnamese person consumes a significant amount of sugar which leads to health problems such as obesity diabetes kidney failure high blood pressure kidney stones. To improve health individuals should limit their daily sugar intake focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits vegetables whole grains following WHO’s guidelines on sugar intake can protect themselves from the harmful effects of sugar on the body.
