From Volleyball Courts to the Streets: The Violent Reality in Ecuador

Attack in Guayaquil leaves at least 8 dead and 8 injured in South Guasmo, Ecuador

A violent attack took place in the coastal province of Guayas, Ecuador over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of at least eight people and injuries to another eight. The incident occurred during a volleyball game, where several armed individuals arrived in a vehicle and began shooting randomly at a group of people. Initial reports indicate that two people died at the scene while several others were injured and later succumbed to their wounds.

The violence in Guayas is just one part of a larger problem plaguing Ecuador. In a separate incident in the coastal province of Manabí, eleven people, including five minors, were kidnapped, resulting in the deaths of five adults. President Daniel Noboa condemned the violence, emphasizing the ongoing battle against criminal gangs and narcoterrorism in the country.

The escalating violence has led to increased police presence and investigations into recent incidents across Ecuador. The government has declared an “internal armed conflict” against criminal groups as part of its efforts to combat this wave of violence. Several arrests have been made in connection with both the kidnapping and murders as authorities work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
