Ukrainian Olympic weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko killed in Ukraine war

Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a renowned Ukrainian weightlifter who competed in the Rio Olympics, tragically lost his life on the front line. The Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation announced this devastating news on Monday. Pielieshenko was only 30 years old and had achieved two European championship titles in 2016 and 2017.

In the Rio Olympics in 2016, he finished in fourth place in the 85kg category. However, his career was cut short in 2018 when he tested positive for a masking agent. Despite this setback, Pielieshenko remained committed to his country and joined the armed forces at the beginning of the Russian offensive in February 2022.

The Ukrainian Olympic Committee paid tribute to Pielieshenko’s bravery and sacrifice by recalling that he had defended Ukraine with distinction. Victor Slobodianiuk, coach of the Ukrainian weightlifting team, also expressed his condolences on Facebook, stating that Pielieshenko “died a hero defending Ukraine.”

The news of Pielieshenko’s passing shocked the sports community and prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from athletes and fans alike. While it is tragic that his life was cut short, Pielieshenko’s legacy will live on as a symbol of dedication to one’s country and athletic prowess.
