Future-Proofing Australian Science: A 10-Year Plan to Strengthen National Capabilities”.

Forming a science infrastructure to bolster our country’s goals

The Australian Science Academy is currently developing a ten-year plan titled ‘Australian Science, Australia’s Future: Science 2035.’ This plan aims to showcase how science must evolve to meet the nation’s goals and advance Australian interests both domestically and globally. It will evaluate the capability of Australia’s science system in terms of competition, collaboration, and contributions to the economy, security, health, and quality of life.

According to Professor Chennupati Jagadish, President of the Academy, Australia has aspirations to decarbonize and diversify the economy while strengthening defense capabilities and enhancing sovereign capability. He emphasized that a resilient and responsive science system is necessary to support these ambitions effectively. In light of the challenges that will shape the nation’s future, Professor Jagadish highlighted the importance of having the capacity, technology, skills, and knowledge required to address them.

The upcoming initiative aims to provide decision-makers with evidence to identify capability gaps and allocate resources strategically. The Academy will engage experts from its Fellowship as well as external sectors in research and innovation to inform this project. Sector consultations and analysis will take place throughout 2024 with an independent report set for delivery in early 2025. The Advisory Group members for this project include a diverse group of experts from various fields.

In summary, ‘Australian Science, Australia’s Future: Science 2035’ seeks to equip decision-makers with information needed for a well-structured science system that supports national ambitions effectively.
