Gov. DeWine Launches $2.5 Million Initiative to Boost Access to Teen Driver Training in Ohio

Teen driver training grant awarded to Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center

The Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center in Chillicothe has received a $72,280 grant as part of a $2.5 million funding initiative aimed at increasing access to teen driver training across Ohio. This initiative, known as the Drive to Succeed Scholarship Program, will distribute grants totaling $2,495,655 to 35 local school districts and government agencies. The program, launched by Governor DeWine in 2022, is intended to provide support to teenage drivers who come from families that may not have the means to afford the cost of a driving school.

Governor DeWine has expressed his backing for the program, emphasizing the importance of equipping young drivers with the necessary skills to ensure safety on the roads. Andy Wilson, Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, emphasized the significance of driver training, pointing out that teens who obtain their driver’s license before turning 18 are less likely to be involved in a crash during their first year of having a license. Emily Davidson, OTSO Director, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the pivotal role of driver training in preparing teens for a successful future.

This announcement comes on the heels of various traffic safety initiatives aimed at young drivers introduced by Governor DeWine, including the Creating Opportunities for Driver Education (CODE) Grant program, which serves to expand driver training options in underserved areas. By channeling these funds to local jurisdictions, the program can address the specific needs and resources of each community.
