Hemisfair’s Plan to Replace Tower of the Americas Pond with Sports Court Pavilion Moves Forward

In San Antonio, a new design plan is being reviewed for the Tower of the Americas grounds. Hemisfair, the organization behind the project, has proposed to construct a “Sports Court” pavilion in place of the current pond at the base of the structure. The pavilion will be funded through philanthropic support.

Hemisfair unveiled the first phase of Civic Park last year, which added green space to the grounds west of the tower. The proposed pavilion is part of the planned Tower Park and aligns with public feedback received, which highlighted the need for public recreation spaces. The pavilion will replace an existing pond that had a negative impact due to unpleasant odors.

Renderings of the project have not yet been made available, but it is known that the pavilion will feature a concrete slab mostly painted for a basketball court. It will also have a 28-foot oval roof to cover the pavilion with overhang for onlookers. The space will be available for community events and rental opportunities.
