High School Science Bowl Champions Head to Washington D.C. for National Showdown

NMMI students emerge victorious in regional Science Bowl, advance to nationals in DC

A group of high school students from the New Mexico Military Institute recently emerged victorious in their regional Science Bowl competition and will now be heading to Washington D.C. for the national finals. The team, which is made up of 12 students, faced off against other high school students from southeastern New Mexico in the competition, which has been running since 1991.

Despite their success in the regional competition, the team is uncertain about their chances in the upcoming national event. “Probably expect to get past like the first round, but not much after that,” commented Lucas Tang, one of the NMMI students. However, they are determined to give it their all and make their school proud.

The competition was intense, with some questions being familiar to the team members. “There are a couple of questions, it’s kind of funny, we were looking at each other like this was under review for the chemistry tests, like literally last week,” said Jonah Pinon. Steven Xu added that the first round was nerve-wracking as they were tied with another team on points, but they eventually calmed down and dominated in subsequent rounds.

The NMMI team is now focusing on preparing for the national competition in Washington D.C., where they will be competing against 68 other teams from different regions. The event is scheduled to take place from April 25th to 29th.
