Honoring the Life and Legacy of Judge Damon J. Keith: The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History’s Latest Exhibit and Theater Upgrade

Charles H. Wright Museum utilizes advanced technology to enhance exhibits and expands theater offerings

Since its inception in 1966, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has been a beacon of education for both Detroit residents and tourists alike. Over the years, the museum has undergone numerous expansions and renovations, introducing new exhibits, upgrading technology, and enhancing its performance theater.

One such exhibit is “Honoring the Life and Legacy of Judge Damon J. Keith,” which showcases the remarkable life of the esteemed judge while also highlighting the innovative technology implemented by the museum. Visitors are taken through a timeline of Judge Keith’s life, from his childhood to his service as a federal district judge.

Neil Barclay, President and CEO of The Wright Museum, explained how the new technology allows them to update exhibits with new information as it becomes available. “What this technology would allow us to do then is whenever new information comes on Judge Keith – let’s say we find out something we didn’t know about him – we can go in and reprogram that, add images, and have a very contemporary view of that subject.”

In addition to its exhibits, The Wright has also revamped its theater to focus on performances such as music, poetry, and film. The General Motors Theater now features a larger stage, state-of-the-art equipment including surround sound and comfortable seating. The theater is now open for rental and available for a wide range of programming opportunities.

Sarah Zientarski recently sat down with Neil Barclay to discuss how the museum is expanding its programming opportunities and operations.
