New Provisional Measures Against Israel Issued by ICJ Following South Africa’s Request Regarding Hunger Crisis in Gaza

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued new provisional measures against Israel on Thursday in response to a request made by South Africa on March 6 regarding the famine situation in the Gaza Strip. South Africa’s request asked for precautions to ensure the safety of 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, including over a million children, due to Israel’s continuous violations of previous measures.

In December, South Africa filed a complaint against Israel at the ICJ for alleged genocide in Gaza. This was in response to a military offensive that resulted in numerous casualties. The court’s recent decision builds on previous measures to prevent genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza and require compliance with humanitarian aid provisions.

The court has directed Israel to take immediate and effective measures, in coordination with the United Nations, to ensure the unhindered supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza. This includes food, water, electricity, shelter, and medical supplies. Additionally, the court has called for an increase in the capacity of land crossings for aid delivery and for Israel’s armed forces to refrain from actions that violate the rights of Palestinians in Gaza.
