Iconic ‘Dune: Part Two’ Popcorn Bucket: A Tale of Viral Marketing and Collectible Merchandise Success

AMC Executive Expresses Regret Over Viral ‘Dune: Part 2’ Popcorn Bucket

The collectible popcorn bucket shaped like a sandworm’s mouth has become an iconic symbol of the “Dune: Part Two” movie. Starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, the movie made headlines with its unique and viral popcorn holder. Initially sold for $25, the popcorn bucket became a sensation due to its creepy appearance and suggestive design.

AMC Theatres’ chief content officer, Elizabeth Frank, expressed mixed feelings about the popcorn bucket. While the company never expected it to receive such attention and criticism, Frank acknowledged that the parody on “Saturday Night Live” became a successful marketing strategy. Despite initial reactions, AMC continues to sell collectible popcorn buckets as souvenirs from concerts.

The trend of selling collectible popcorn and drink holders inspired by popular movies began with AMC and Disney’s release of an R2-D2 themed container for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. Since then, vessels for “Barbie,” “Wonka,” and “Mean Girls” have been launched. The “Dune: Part Two” popcorn bucket stands out as a notable example of the successful collectible pop culture merchandise trend, now being resold for upwards of $175 on eBay and Etsy.
