Iowa Educators Recognized for Excellence in Math and Science: Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann Named Finalists in Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

In 2024, two Iowa educators have been named as finalists in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) by the Iowa Department of Education. Susan Wenger, a teacher at Valley Elementary School in Elgin, is nominated for PAEMST Mathematics, while Brenda Kaufmann, a second-grade teacher at North Tama Elementary School in Traer, is nominated for PAEMST Science and also serves as the district’s STEM coordinator.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade teacher in STEM subjects may receive in the United States. Since its creation by Congress in 1983, over 5,200 teachers from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been recognized. The program recognizes up to 110 teachers each year with awards alternating between elementary and secondary teachers annually.

The nomination of Brenda Kaufmann as a finalist reflects her dedication to teaching and her contributions to the field of STEM education. Award recipients are selected based on their deep content knowledge, ability to motivate students, and positive impact on student achievement. They are seen as role models in their communities and among their colleagues. Winners will receive a paid trip to Washington D.C for recognition events, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and a certificate signed by the President of the United States.
