Revolutionizing Art Authentication: Combining Forensic Science with Human Expertise

Dr. Alex Surtees, a forensic science lecturer at the University of Bradford, is excited to be a part of a groundbreaking project that could redefine the art world. The project involves using state-of-the-art technology to analyze three newly discovered paintings in order to determine if they were created by John Constable, a renowned 19th Century artist known for his landscape paintings.

The works, named The Coming Storm, Sandpit and Norwich School, are currently undergoing testing to verify their authenticity. Forensics experts are using cutting edge technology such as CT scanning and 3D microscopy equipment to analyze the pigments and brushwork of the paintings in order to see if they match Constable’s known techniques. While science can provide helpful clues, final verification will ultimately be up to art experts.

Dr. Surtees emphasizes that while this new method is exciting, it should not replace traditional art analysis methods entirely. He believes that there is no substitute for human expertise when it comes to evaluating the artistic value of a piece.

The results of the testing will be shared with the private owners of the paintings in the coming months once the analysis is complete. Dr. Surtees expressed excitement about being able to contribute his knowledge and expertise towards helping art enthusiasts make informed decisions about these pieces’ authenticity and artistic value.
