Growing support among US Democrats to halt military aid to Israel

A shift in American policy towards Israel is becoming increasingly evident as the firm support for the war in Gaza from the Democratic majority begins to erode. More and more high-ranking voices are calling for a suspension of military aid to Israel, especially after the recent massacre of seven volunteers from the NGO World Central Kitchen. This trend has intensified since the tragic event, leading respected figures like former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to join in urging President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken to take this step, which was previously unthinkable.

The opposition to weapons shipments to Israel is no longer confined to the most progressive wing of the Democratic party but is spreading within the party as a whole. The high number of civilian casualties in Gaza, exceeding 33,000, and the looming famine in the region have only added fuel to the fire. The attack on aid workers was a turning point, leading to calls for a halt in arms transfers. A letter signed by Pelosi and 39 other Democratic congressmen, including notable figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, demands a US investigation into the attack and questions the justification for continuing arms transfers.
