Italian Employment Surges: Nearly 300,000 More Workers Celebrate May Day in 2024 Thanks to Small Businesses

In February 2024, Italy saw an increase of 292,000 employed people compared to April 2023, according to Istat’s latest provisional data. This means that nearly 300,000 more workers are celebrating May Day this year than the previous year. The CGIA Research Office reported that in April 2023, there were 23,481,000 employed people in Italy, while in February 2024, it reached 23,773,000.

Almost 60% of Italian workers find employment in small businesses excluding the public sector. This shows that work is mainly created by small entrepreneurs in the country. To improve the employment trend, it is crucial to support these small businesses by reducing taxes, bureaucracy and providing necessary liquidity for them to invest in increasing competitiveness.

According to official data from 2023, there were 23.6 million employed people in Italy – a growth of around 471 thousand compared to the pre-Covid period. The South of Italy saw the highest percentage increase in employment at around 3.5%. Forecasts suggest that the overall number of employed people is expected to reach around 24 million workers by 2025.
