Italian Government Raises Electromagnetic Emission Limits for 5G Development and Strict Safety Standards

Enhancing the 5G network with new limits on electromagnetic fields

In line with law 214/2023, Italy has the ability to increase the limit of electromagnetic emissions from 6 V/m in 2003 to 15 V/m as indicated by the device in question. The Ministry of Business and Made in Italy has noted that adjusting the limits of electromagnetic fields can contribute to the development of the Italian 5G economy, enabling high-performance networks that enhance the country’s competitiveness.

To ensure the most efficient use of the frequency spectrum, corrective provisions have been introduced to the Electronic Communications Code, in alignment with the CEI 211-10 Technical Standard. These provisions are guided by two core principles: the fair distribution of electromagnetic space and effectiveness. The increase in emission limits, effective from 29 April 2024, will support the broader adoption of 5G technology, allowing mobile operators to enhance the capacity of their networks.

It is worth noting that while Italy has adopted a 15 V/m limit, this remains one of the strictest profiles in Europe. However, this limit is significantly lower than the recommendations of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which sets the maximum limit at 61 V/m. This discrepancy reflects Italy’s commitment to stringent safety standards in regulating electromagnetic emissions.
