Italian Leader Giuseppe Conte: Anti-Corruption Rules Weakened by Meloni Government, Calls for Collective Effort to Save Judiciary’s Weapons.

Conte: “The Government is undermining the authority of the judiciary”

Giuseppe Conte, the leader of the 5 Star Movement, has expressed his concerns about the weakening of anti-corruption rules and the blunting of the judiciary’s weapons by the Meloni government in an interview with “La Repubblica”. In particular, he spoke out against what he described as “ignoble attacks” against Vice President of the Anti-Mafia Cafiero De Raho and the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office.

Conte highlighted that during De Raho’s management, there was abusive access to personal information outside of legal procedures, which is now being exploited by the majority to question the entire anti-corruption structure. He warned that this is a significant threat to essential investigative tools like wiretapping and called for a collective effort to prevent its systematic dismantling.

The leader also criticized the administration’s implementation of psycho-aptitude tests for magistrates, arguing that it aims to subjugate the judiciary and undermine principles of judicial autonomy and equality before the law. He accused Gelli of echoing past attempts to influence democratic decision-making processes through indirect means, seeking to weaken constitutional systems and erode fundamental principles like judicial independence and equality under the law.

Conte emphasized that it is crucial to stand up against these threats and take action to protect judicial integrity and anti-corruption efforts.
