Judo Championship Thrills: Abu Dhabi World Championships End on High Note, with Emotional Wins and Exciting Matches

Abu Dhabi is rocked by heavyweights at Judo World Championship

On the final day of the 2024 Abu Dhabi World Championships, there were many exciting developments in store. UAE Judo IJF General Treasurer, Naser Al Tamimi, expressed his excitement for the event, stating that it was the perfect way to celebrate the silver jubilee with the judo family worldwide. One of the highlights of the event was a Self-Defence Judo for Women initiative, which was celebrated with a special ceremony hosted by IJF President Mr. Marius Vizer.

In the -100kg category, Canada’s Shady ELNAHAS had a remarkable performance, aiming for Canada’s first gold in Abu Dhabi. Zelym KOTSOIEV from Azerbaijan also showcased top form throughout the championship. The final match between KOTSOIEV and ELNAHAS was intense, with KOTSOIEV ultimately securing a waza-ari to claim the red back patch and earn Azerbaijan a second gold medal.

Moving onto the +78kg category, Wakaba TOMITA of Japan faced off against Kayra OZDEMIR from Turkey in the final. TOMITA emerged victorious with an emotional win, capturing her world title and adding another accolade to her impressive career. In the +100kg division, Guram TUSHISHVILI aimed to reclaim his 2018 title but Minjong KIM stood in his way. KIM ultimately won the final match with a swift counter and hold down, securing her first gold medal in this prestigious competition.
