Klager Elementary School Hosts Successful Around the World with Math and Science Night

On April 26, 2024, families gathered at Klager Elementary School for a fun and educational night of STEAM learning. The event was a collaborative effort between Klager and high school volunteers and took place in the school’s cafeteria. Families were exposed to various topics from around the world through interactive exhibits, demonstrations, and presentations.

One of the highlights of the night was the science behind growing food in the Arctic, which captivated children’s curiosity about climate change and sustainable agriculture. Another popular exhibit showcased the discovery of popcorn in Peru, along with its cultural significance in Peruvian cuisine. The invention of sorbet in China was also on display, highlighting Chinese culinary traditions and innovation.

The Klager K-12 robotics teams demonstrated their latest creations, showcasing technology’s potential in engineering and design. Children were able to practice their skills with K’Nex sets invented in the United States, which encouraged creativity and problem-solving abilities. An art show preview was on display around the cafeteria, providing inspiration for children to explore different forms of artistic expression. Additionally, a make-and-take activity allowed children to create notebooks first invented in Australia.

Math skills were also tested as children learned about the invention of lollipops in Spain and participated in a challenging math game called Mancala created in Africa. Title 1 was present to educate families on reading around Michigan through children’s books written by Michigan authors and products. MI Future Funds provided valuable information on college planning and saving for families looking ahead to future education opportunities.

At the end of the night, families voted for their favorite station, with the Robotics Teams winning first place. The event was an overwhelming success, with all attendees enjoying an interactive and engaging experience that they would remember for years to come.
