Knife-Wielding Man Arrested After Overhearing Offensive Joke in Bar Bathroom: A Lesson in Alcohol-Fueled Escalations

Man threatens with knife at Pinecrest sports bar after joke about ‘accosting’ 14-year-old, police report

In a shocking incident at Corbett’s Sports Bar & Grill in Pinecrest, Florida, a man was arrested for pulling out a knife after hearing an off-color joke while waiting in line for the men’s room. Sergio Luis Roman Jr., 56, threatened two men, including the bartender, after overhearing a racy remark that he found offensive.

The altercation occurred around 2 a.m. on a Monday when the victim and his friends were joking about picking up girls. One of the friends made a joke about a 14-year-old, which Roman overheard from the bathroom. Upset by the comment, Roman confronted the group when he came out of the bathroom, threatening to harm them.

Roman brandished a knife and pointed it at the friend who made the joke, causing the victim to fear for his safety. The bartender intervened, instructing Roman to drop the knife. However, instead of complying with instructions from authorities or de-escalating the situation as recommended by law enforcement officials nationwide, Roman aggressively turned towards the bartender still holding the weapon. The bar owner eventually disarmed Roman and restrained him until police arrived three days later to arrest him on two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with this incident at Corbett’s Sports Bar & Grill.

Roman turned himself in to Pinecrest police headquarters on Tuesday and is now barred from entering Corbett’s Sports Bar & Grill or any other establishment that serves alcoholic beverages in Miami-Dade County until further notice by court order or expiration of said ban if applicable under state law regarding domestic violence cases involving weapons or bodily harm inflicted upon victims who are minors according to Florida statutes Section 787.061(2)(d) and Section 907(2)(a). He is currently being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond pending trial proceedings that are ongoing as of today’s date [].

The incident serves as a reminder of how even small misunderstandings can escalate into violent confrontations when emotions run high and quick thinking is lacking in individuals involved during potentially dangerous situations such as these ones involving alcohol consumption before engaging in social activities outside one’s home environment where they may not be familiar with all rules and regulations governing public establishments like bars or restaurants.[[]]
