Laurel River’s Record-Breaking Win in Dubai World Cup: A Tale of Triumph Against All Odds

Laurel River dominates Dubai World Cup, winning by a record 8 1/2 lengths and earning $12M

On March 30, 2024, Laurel River emerged victorious in the $12 million Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The horse, ridden by jockey Tadhg O’Shea, secured a record-breaking win by a margin of 8½ lengths, surpassing the previous record set by Dubai Millennium in 2000.

The race saw twelve competitors vying for victory, with Laurel River starting from the far outside post. Despite this disadvantageous position, the horse took the lead midway through the 1¼-mile race and maintained its pace until the finish line. The victory was a significant achievement for trainer Bhupat Seemar, who expressed disbelief and joy at the outcome.

Formerly trained by Bob Baffert, Laurel River was moved to Seemar’s care at Juddmonte Farms in Dubai last summer. Despite the change in trainers, the horse proved its capabilities by outperforming its former stablemate Ushba Tesoro, who finished in second place and earned $2.4 million. Senor Buscador from the U.S clinched third place and received $1.2 million in prize money.

Other notable competitors included Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Derma Sotogake from Japan who finished sixth place and Defunded who came seventh. Newgate trained by Baffert placed ninth.

Jockey Frankie Dettori expressed disappointment in his horse’s performance stating that it ran flat during the race.

Overall, Laurel River’s victory was an impressive feat of athleticism and determination that will be remembered as one of the greatest moments in Dubai’s racing history.
