Layoffs rise in Bay Area tech industry as Apple and Lockheed Martin join the trend

Hundreds of new job cuts shake Bay Area economy as tech layoffs hit hard

Over the past few months, several prominent tech companies in the Bay Area have announced significant layoffs that will result in hundreds of job losses. In April, Apple announced 614 layoffs in Santa Clara, bringing the total number of job cuts revealed by tech companies in the region to 949. While this number is higher than the previous month’s cuts, it is still significantly less compared to the layoffs announced earlier this year.

Recently, Lockheed Martin, Coherent, and Hinge Health all filed official notifications with the state Employment Development Department announcing their intentions to cut jobs. Lockheed Martin will eliminate 68 positions in Sunnyvale and Palo Alto starting on June 10, while Coherent will lay off 61 employees in Santa Clara on the same date. Hinge Health plans to cut 77 positions in San Francisco on June 11. All three companies have described these job cuts as permanent.

The recent job cuts at these companies highlight ongoing challenges faced by tech firms in the Bay Area. With over 38,800 jobs eliminated since 2022, it’s clear that these companies are struggling to keep up with changing market demands and economic conditions. As a result, many tech workers are left without jobs and struggling to find new opportunities in an increasingly competitive industry.
