Lightning Strike Injures Manhattan Resident During Severe Thunderstorm in New York City

NYC’s World Trade Center Struck by Lightning in Severe Thunderstorms, Resulting in One Injury

A severe thunderstorm hit New York City on Thursday, causing heavy rain, gusty winds and frequent lightning. The storm brought several dozen lightning strikes to the area as it passed through.

At its peak, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings covered over 13 million people in and around the city. The storm struck around 10 a.m. ET, with lightning hitting various areas including the One World Trade Center in Manhattan. In total, 174 lightning bolts were detected in the greater New York City metro area during the storm.

One of these bolts caused an injury when it struck a building along Pine Street in Manhattan. According to New York Fire Department officials, the individual was taken to a Lower Manhattan hospital for treatment but the extent of their injuries was not disclosed. The storm left a trail of damage as it moved through the city, leaving many residents without power and causing disruptions to daily routines.
