London Mayor Sadiq Khan Wins Historic Third Term: A Look at His Journey from Humble Beginnings to Prominent Political Figure

Sadiq Khan makes history as first London mayor to win third term

In a historic election, Sadiq Khan, the current mayor of London and a representative of the opposition Labor Party, won the mayoral election for the third time. He secured 61.2% of the vote in Thursday’s election, with his closest rival, Susan Hall of the ruling Conservative Party, receiving 15.1%. The first election for the mayor of London took place in 2000 and was won by Labor Party representative Ken Livingstone. Khan became the first Muslim to head a European capital when he was elected mayor in 2016.

Khan was born in Tooting, South London in 1978 to Pakistani parents who emigrated from Pakistan shortly before his birth. He was raised in a large family with a strong Islamic upbringing and has always identified as a Muslim. His father worked as a bus driver for 25 years while his mother was a seamstress and housewife. Despite his humble beginnings, Khan has become a prominent figure in British politics and continues to serve as a key leader for the city of London.

The previous London mayoral election was held in spring of 2021 and Khan’s term was extended by one year due to cancellation of elections held amid coronavirus pandemic. With this win, he will serve another four-year term making him the first mayor in London’s history to win three terms. The Labour party strengthened its position in local elections held throughout England during this election cycle.
