Long Island High School Senior Earns Spot in International Science and Engineering Fair with Groundbreaking Breast Cancer Research

Bellmore Student Participates in Elite Science Competition

A Kennedy High School senior from Bellmore, NY has earned a spot among 15 students on Long Island who will be competing in the International Science and Engineering Fair. The fair is set to take place in Los Angeles through May 11.

Ava Goldsmith, a senior who has been involved in advanced science research for three years, qualified for the fair by winning first place in the 2024 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair in the Cell and Microbiology category. Goldsmith’s research project focuses on the implications of breast cancer therapy, specifically looking at a cancer-promoting network called the “epichaperome.” This is a significant achievement for Goldsmith, as only a select few students worldwide have the opportunity to compete in the Regeneron-affiliated science fairs. Each year, around 1,600 students qualify to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair, where they have the chance to win nearly $5 million in awards, scholarships, and internships.

Goldsmith’s dedication and hard work have paid off, earning her a well-deserved spot among the elite group of students competing at this prestigious event. She is thrilled about being able to showcase her research on a global stage and hopes that it will inspire others to pursue careers in science and engineering.
