Mars Science Mission: A Day of Drilling, Analysis and Imaging

Observing Our Environment: Sol 2842

Our day’s science activities include taking samples to CheMin and conducting about an hour of remote science. First, Mastcam will take a 53-frame stereo mosaic of the fractured intermediate unit to the southeast, helping our science team plan our drive path after completing drilling activities at Mary Anning. Then, ChemCam will analyze the target “Bishop’s Palace” for layering and possible diagenetic features, as well as take a long-distance mosaic of the “Maybole” target located on a nearby hill.

To compare the two images, overlapping frames between the RMI and Mastcam mosaics will be used. Later in the day, Mastcam will document our ChemCam target Bishop’s Palace with a documentation image. Atmospheric monitoring activities with Navcam are also planned for the day. Finally, a MARDI image will be taken to continue our change detection campaign at our current location.
